Territory Optimization Troubleshooting
This page lists the common error messages that may be returned on a territory optimization
Message: "The optimization process requires a balance. Please select or add one in order to proceed."
Error Key: _Optimization_Territories_Balance_Attr_Invalid_Warning
Cause: Either no balance attribute has been set up, or a balance has not been selected for this optimization run.
Resolution:
1. Ensure there is at least one active balance in your alignment. For example, add sales data to your alignment so you can select it as a balance metric.
2. Verify that your balance is selected before trying to optimize again.
3. If you have already selected an active balance and still encounter this message, please contact us on live chat with as much detail as possible about your alignment configuration.
Message: "To optimize on centers, please ensure that at least two center points are available within the active areas."
Error Key: _Optimization_Territories_Number_Territories_Invalid_Center_Warning
Cause:The center dataset you have chosen to optimize on has zero or only 1 record in the area where you are updating territories. To optimize on centers, you must have at least 2 active points within this area.
Resolution:
1. Check Center Dataset: Verify that the dataset you are using for center points contains at least two records in total.
2. Check Territory Boundaries & Filters: Ensure that at least two of those center points fall within an area where territories are active and can be updated.
3. Contact Support: If you have confirmed that two or more active center points exist within your alignment area and you still see this message, please contact us on live chat with as much detail as possible about your alignment configuration
Message: "Optimization requires more than one area. Please increase the number of areas to continue."
Error Key: _Optimization_Territories_Number_Territories_Invalid_Warning
Cause: The target number of areas/territories set for this optimization run is 0 or 1. The optimization engine works by balancing workloads across multiple territories, so creating fewer than 2 areas is unsupported.
Resolution:
1. Increase Target Areas: Locate the target area/territory setting in your optimization configuration and update the value to 2 or more.
2. Check Selected Geographic Filter: Ensure your active selection or filter contains enough data/accounts to support splitting into 2 or more areas.
3. Contact Support: If you have verified that the target number is set to 2 or higher and you still see this message, please contact us on live chat with details about your alignment configuration.
Message: "The optimization process cannot reduce the number of areas to a value lower than the number of areas with locked accounts. Please increase the number of areas or unlock some accounts."
Error Key: _Optimization_Territories_Number_Territories_Invalid_Locked
Cause: You are attempting to reduce the total number of territories, but the alignment contains locked accounts across more territories than your new target count. Because locked accounts force their assigned territory to remain active, the optimizer cannot consolidate or eliminate those areas.
Resolution:
1. Evaluate Minimum Territory Limit: Count how many distinct territories currently contain locked accounts. Your target number of territories cannot be lower than this count.
2. Choose a Solution:
- Option A (Increase Target): Adjust your target number of territories so that it is equal to or greater than the number of territories containing locked accounts.
- Option B (Unlock Accounts): Locate and unlock accounts in the territories you wish to consolidate, then rerun the optimization with your lower target number.
3. Contact Support: If your target number is higher than the number of territories with locked accounts and you still see this message, please contact us on live chat with details about your alignment configuration.
Message: "The optimization process cannot reduce the number of areas to a value lower than the number of areas with exceptions. Please increase the number of areas or remove some exceptions."
Error Key: _Optimization_Territories_Number_Territories_Invalid_Exception
Cause: You are attempting to reduce the total number of territories, but the alignment contains locked or exception accounts across more territories than your new target count. Because locked or exception accounts force their assigned territory to remain active, the optimizer cannot consolidate or eliminate those areas.
Resolution:
Message: "Optimization runs only on active areas that have assignments. Please ensure there are enough active areas with assignments to match the number of areas requested."
Error Key: _Optimization_Territories_Insufficient_Input
Cause: The selection you are optimizing contains fewer active, assigned data points (e.g., accounts, postal codes, or units) than the target number of territories requested. For example, the system cannot split a dataset into 10 territories if only 5 active accounts exist in that area.
Resolution:
1. Verify Your Target Territory Count: Ensure the number of requested territories does not exceed the total number of active, assigned units in your alignment area.
2. Check Selected Filters & Statuses: Verify that your account/geographic data points are marked as active and properly assigned to the region being optimized.
3. Check Balance Metrics: Confirm you are using the correct balance dataset/field and that it contains populated numerical data for those areas.
4. Adjust Your Configuration: Either lower your target territory count or expand your alignment scope by adding more active accounts or geographic units.
5. Contact Support: If you have confirmed that sufficient active, assigned data points exist and you still encounter this error, please contact us on live chat with details about your alignment configuration.
Message: "Optimization runs only on active areas that have assignments. The amount of exceptions detected prevents the optimization from working. To proceed please ensure that there are sufficient areas with sufficient assignments for the number of areas requested."
Error Key: _Optimization_Territories_Insufficient_Input_Exceptions
Cause: The optimization engine cannot run because too many accounts or areas are unavailable for assignment (marked as exceptions or fixed assignments). Because such objects cannot be reassigned by the optimizer, there are not enough remaining "available" objects to split into your target number of territories.
Resolution:
1. Verify Available Data: Count your total active accounts/areas in the target region and subtract any locked exceptions. The remaining “available” count must be large enough to split across your requested number of territories.
2. Choose a Solution:
- Option A (Remove Exceptions): Remove exceptions from accounts/areas in the region so the optimizer has enough flexible data points to reallocate.
- Option B (Reduce Target Count): Lower the target number of territories requested for this optimization run.
3. Contact Support: If you have confirmed that sufficient unlocked, active data points exist and you still encounter this error, please contact us on live chat with details about your alignment configuration.
Message: "Optimization runs only on active areas that have assignments. The amount of locked accounts detected prevents the optimization from working. To proceed please ensure that there are sufficient areas with sufficient assignments for the number of areas requested."
Error Key: _Optimization_Territories_Insufficient_Input_Locked
Cause: The optimization engine cannot create the requested number of territories because too many accounts are locked in place. Because the optimizer cannot reassign locked accounts, there are not enough remaining unlocked accounts to distribute into your target number of territories.
Resolution:
1. Calculate Available Unlocked Accounts: Count the total active accounts in your target area and subtract those marked as locked. The remaining unlocked account count must be large enough to support your requested number of territories.
2. Choose a Solution:
- Option A (Unlock Accounts): Locate and unlock accounts within the active area to give the optimizer enough flexible data points to build territories.
- Option B (Reduce Target Territories): Lower your target territory count to fit the number of available unlocked accounts.
3. Contact Support: If you have confirmed that sufficient unlocked accounts exist and you still see this message, please contact us on live chat with details about your alignment configuration.
Message: "Can't run optimization. Please use the Filter available in the Menu to reduce the number of areas. Max number of areas is {0}."
Error Key: _Optimization_Territories_limit
Cause: You are attempting to create more territories than your account allows
Resolution:
1. Lower the number of territories you are trying to create to be within your account limits. locked accounts. Your target number of territories cannot be lower than this count.
2. Contact Support: If you think you should be able to optimise based on this number, please contact us on live chat with details about your alignment configuration.
